This shocked Kennedy, who was under the impression that all the time she’s worked with Milk on the post-Drag Race club circuit meant that they had a solid relationship. Kennedy, of course, was not sent home, and was actually in the room at the time. The lines were drawn at the top of the episode with the queens fresh after Shangela’s decision from the previous episode to send Thorgy home over Kennedy, a move most in the room seemed to agree with until Milk, still under the impression her hyper-specific take on Celine Dion was slept on by the judges, broke the peace by claiming, actually, she would have sent Kennedy home instead. On the other, you have Milk, a statuesque Manhattan club kid and current darling of the New York fashion world with a unique aesthetic that breaks past traditional drag. On one side, you have Kennedy Davenport whose Texas via South Florida drag upbringing and cautious interactions with other queens often lends itself to letting some fans stereotype her as a bitter pageant queen. Tonight’s episode offered itself up as a study in contrast of two queens who are both polar opposites in the world of drag, and as people. Embracing the range of drag has not only helped to dispel tired stereotypes about the art form, but has also delivered a hefty amount of juicy drama over the years. “Future of Drag” saga of the fourth season. It was a lesson producers learned with the game-changing arrival of Raja in Season 3, and was really solidified by Phi Phi and Sharon’s now near-mythological “Tired Ass Showgirl” vs. RuPaul’s Drag Race didn’t quite find its footing as a television program until it stopped pretending that all drag queens are basically the same and learned to embrace the differences inherent in the drag world.

What’s the Difference Between Ear Mites and Yeast Infections in Dogs? Yeast infections in a dog’s ears can be very itchy, causing dogs to scratch their ears or rub their head excessively. The ear may appear to be greasy, and the hair may be matted. Usually, you will see redness, which may extend onto the flap of the ear, and the discharge is generally brown. Earsĭog ear yeast infections are quite common, and the ears often smell sweet or musty. Sometimes a brown discharge can be seen in the nail beds.ĭogs with yeast infections on the paws usually lick their paws more than normal. The underside of the paws, between the pads, is affected most often, but yeast can occur anywhere on the paws. PawsĪ dog with yeast infections on their paws can have red, irritated, and itchy paws. Yeast infections on a dog’s mouth or face can cause extreme itching or face rubbing. If the infection is chronic, the skin may thicken and become darker in color. The affected skin may be red, irritated, itchy, greasy, or flaky, and there may be hair loss. They are often seen in areas that are moist, such as in skin folds, especially in “wrinkly” dog breeds. Yeast infections can occur anywhere on a dog’s skin, including the belly. Here are the most common areas for yeast infections in dogs and some signs that you can look out for. Yeast infections can cause red, irritated, or itchy skin or ears, and there is often a sweet or musty odor.Ĭhronic yeast infections can cause the skin to become thickened and discolored (gray, brown, or black). What Are the Symptoms of Yeast Infections in Dogs? There are no studies to confirm that any of the following cause yeast infections on a dog’s skin: Other underlying issues that may cause yeast infections in dogs include hormonal problems or other diseases that suppress the immune system. It is very common to see yeast infections in a dog’s ears or on their skin if they have food allergies or environmental allergies. This means that there is some other issue that is weakening the skin’s defense mechanisms to allow the yeast to grow in higher numbers than normal. Yeast infections in dogs are usually secondary problems. Anything that diminishes the normal defenses in the skin can make yeast infections more likely.ĭog breeds that are more prone to yeast dermatitis include: Generally, yeast infections are caused by another issue. Yeast infections in dogs are quite common and can occur anywhere on the skin, including the ears. A yeast infection happens when there’s an excessive amount of yeast in a certain area. Yeast are spore-producing fungi that are always present on a dog’s skin, usually in low numbers, as part of the normal flora. This form is most effective when used behind furniture, under beds, in storage spaces and dark corners. Liquid drugs are often sold as a powder, which is then mixed with water to form a residual spray.Products such as Drione Dust and Delta Dust Insecticide are often recommended. You can also spray powder into openings in the wall using a hand sprayer. Suitable areas for powder application are attics, basements and low spaces. Powdered medicine is most effective when used in low-traffic areas so that no one can touch it but spiders.Insecticide will kill spiders when they come into contact with the drug, while also preventing other spiders from “moving in”. Use liquid or powdered insecticide to spray or sprinkle on cobwebs and surrounding area. Once you know where the webs are, there are many ways to get rid of the spiders without having to kill them directly. During this stage, both male and female spiders are non-venomous to humans. You cannot tell the difference between male and female spiders when they are young. Young spiders may have yellow or red patches on their backs like adult males. Baby spiders are white or ivory white when newly hatched, and the color will deepen as they grow older. They often have many red spots on their belly and may have red or yellow streaks across their backs. Male spiders are about half the size of female spiders, brown or gray in color. The spider’s body is about 1.3 cm long, but the entire length of the spider is about 3.8 cm including the legs. They are charcoal black, have a round belly, and have a red hourglass shape under the belly. Female spiders are the easiest to spot – and also the most dangerous. They are the most venomous spiders in North America. Black widow spiders are found throughout the United States, Canada, and other temperate regions of the earth. Now that you have everything ready to go, it’s important to know what happens you package it. Finally, check your links to make sure they’re all valid. This is especially important when sending the INDD to another team member who needs to further edit it. Next, check to see if the potential recipients have the same access to the fonts you used. One of the best ways to accomplish this is by naming or renaming all of the included files something uniform. Necessary preparations to undergoīefore packaging your file, make sure you know what’s about to take place and how to prepare everything correctly. This is the idea behind the packaging utility for InDesign. You should instead decide to place them all into the same box and only have to send one item now. However, this is a cluttered option that lacks efficiency. You could place them into ten separate containers and send them individually. For example, let’s say you have ten different bottles to send all to the same place. Think of this process like physically sending something in the mail. Packaging behaves similarly to mail tracking systems. It ensures a consistent flow from one process to the next, keeping things like layouts and structures of a project in the right place. Packaging the files is the solution to this problem. Because of the complexity and many variables of an INDD project, sometimes things like fonts or links get lost during the sharing process. When sharing anything that has the InDesign file extension, it’s important to have all the elements in their right place. The INDD lets users add text and graphics without disrupting the overall layout of a project. The INDD is typically used for professional, business creations such as marketing layouts, flyers and newspapers. It includes a wide array of unique elements such as page data, layouts and more. The InDesign file format is the file extension used by the software system Adobe InDesign. First, let’s be sure you have a clear understanding of the INDD and its functions. The following is a complete breakdown of how and why to package your INDD files. In order to send them in the manner you have created them, you need to first package them. The Adobe InDesign files (extension INDD) are packed with different fonts, graphics and links. Please note that we are unable to deliver to PO boxes or Parcel Lockers. Christians who helped Jews were in the same situation as other civilians who helped imprison or kill Jews, or ignored their suffering. The two lines of research aren’t as different as they might seem they’re actually two sides of the same coin.Ī key insight from research on heroism so far is that the very same situations that inflame the hostile imagination in some people, making them villains, can also instill the heroic imagination in other people, prompting them to perform heroic deeds. My work on heroism follows 35 years of research in which I studied the psychology of evil, including my work on the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. We’re just now starting to scientifically distinguish heroism from these other concepts and zero in on what makes a hero. Compassion is a virtue that may lead to heroism, but we don’t know that it does. Simply put, then, the key to heroism is a concern for other people in need-a concern to defend a moral cause, knowing there is a personal risk, done without expectation of reward.īy that definition, then, altruism is heroism light-it doesn’t always involve a serious risk. Finally, it is performed without external gain anticipated at the time of the act. Third, a heroic act is one performed with recognition of possible risks and costs, be they to one’s physical health or personal reputation, in which the actor is willing to accept anticipated sacrifice. Second, it’s engaged in voluntarily, even in military contexts, as heroism remains an act that goes beyond something required by military duty. In that time, we’ve come to define heroism as an activity with several parts.įirst, it’s performed in service to others in need-whether that’s a person, group, or community-or in defense of certain ideals. For the last five years, my colleagues and I have been exploring the nature and roots of heroism, studying exemplary cases of heroism and surveying thousands of people about their choices to act (or not act) heroically. I believe that heroism is different than altruism and compassion. It could be that heroes have more compassion or empathy maybe there’s a hero gene maybe it’s because of their levels of oxytocin-research by neuroeconomist Paul Zak has shown that this “love hormone” in the brain increases the likelihood you’ll demonstrate altruism. Show love and respect to others this monthīut when we ask why people become heroic, research doesn’t yet have an answer. Research has uncovered many answers to the second question: Evil can be fostered by dehumanization, diffusion of responsibility, obedience to authority, unjust systems, group pressure, moral disengagement, and anonymity, to name a few. Learn more about Zimbardo's Heroic Imagination Project. Read this Greater Good essay on the "psychology of the bystander." Read his essay on " The Banality of Heroism," which further explores the conditions that can promote heroism vs. Watch the video of Philip Zimbardo's Greater Good talk on heroism. In this excerpt from his talk, he zeroes in on his research and educational program designed to foster the “heroic imagination.” In his talk, Zimbardo discusses the psychology of evil and of heroism, exploring why good people sometimes turn bad and how we can encourage more people to perform heroic acts. This month, Greater Good features videos of a presentation by Philip Zimbardo, the world-renowned psychologist perhaps best known for his infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. They pass signals from sensory neurons and other interneurons to motor neurons and other interneurons. Interneurons are neural intermediaries found in your brain and spinal cord. These muscles contract, which allows food to move through your digestive tract. When you eat, for instance, lower motor neurons in your spinal cord send signals to the smooth muscles in your esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Upper motor neurons carry signals between your brain and spinal cord. Lower motor neurons carry signals from the spinal cord to the smooth muscles and skeletal muscles. There are two types of motor neurons: lower and upper. These neurons allow the brain and spinal cord to communicate with muscles, organs, and glands all over the body. Motor neurons play a role in movement, including voluntary and involuntary movements. Those neurons send a message to your brain, which makes you aware of the heat. Smell and taste are chemical inputs.įor example, stepping on hot sand activates sensory neurons in the soles of your feet. Sound, touch, heat, and light are physical inputs. Sensory neurons are triggered by physical and chemical inputs from your environment. In terms of function, scientists classify neurons into three broad types: sensory, motor, and interneurons. These neurons are inhibitory neurons, meaning they release neurotransmitters that keep other neurons from firing. Purkinje neurons have multiple dendrites that fan out from the cell body. The cortex is the part of the brain responsible for conscious thoughts. These are the largest neuron cells and are mostly found in the cortex. These neurons have one axon but several dendrites to form a pyramid type shape. But they can also be found in parts of the nervous system that help the nose and ear function. These types of neurons are mostly found in the retina of the eye. At the end of one side is the axon, and the dendrites are on the other side. Bipolar neurons have two extensions extending from the cell body. Usually only found in invertebrate species, these neurons have a single axon. This is the most common form of neuron in the central nervous system. These neurons have a single axon and symmetrical dendrites that extend from it. Each combines several elements of the basic neuron shape. However, there are five major neuron forms. Given the sheer number of neurons, there are thousands of different types, much like there are thousands of species of living organisms on Earth. Neurons vary in structure, function, and genetic makeup. These cells have highly developed dendritic trees which allow them to receive thousands of signals. For instance, Purkinje cells are a special type of neuron found in a part of the brain called the cerebellum. How many they have generally depends on their role. Neurons can have more than one set of dendrites, known as dendritic trees. Like antennae, dendrites receive and process signals from the axons of other neurons. Dendritesĭendrites are fibrous roots that branch out from the cell body. Myelin helps axons to conduct an electrical signal. Many axons are insulated with a fatty substance called myelin. It joins the cell body at a specialized junction called the axon hillock. AxonĪn axon is a long, tail-like structure. It’s enclosed by a membrane that both protects it and allows it to interact with its immediate surroundings. Like other cell bodies, a neuron’s soma contains a nucleus and specialized organelles. The cell body contains genetic information, maintains the neuron’s structure, and provides energy to drive activities. Cell bodyĪlso known as a soma, the cell body is the core section of the neuron. However, nearly all neurons have three essential parts: a cell body, an axon, and dendrites. Neurons vary in size, shape, and structure depending on their role and location. In case you were wondering, elephants release poop at about 6 cm per second a human releases poop at about 2 cm per second.ĭespite the truly important scientific data derived from a steaming pile of dung, many people have reduced the discussion around poop to toilet humor and jokes. Of course, they release more excrement, but it takes about the same amount of time for an elephant to do his business as a dog. It was determined that larger animals defecate faster than smaller animals. Scientists have measured and quantified the odor of animal scat, from least smelly to overwhelmingly odorous. Which animal species turds sink vs which species turds do not sink. Some scientists even study the physics of poop. When they need a specific sample, they simply search the enclosure for droppings with red or blue glitter! To ensure they are monitoring the correct dung pile, they mix a specific color of non-toxic glitter with the rhino’s meal. Zoos working with the critically endangered white rhino measure hormone levels in their poop to ensure successful mating. By analyzing animal poop scientists can measure things like stress and reproductive hormones, toxins in the environment, and the availability of food in the environment. DNA can be extracted from poop and individual animals can be identified and studied by scooping their poop. Scientists can determine not only which animals are present and what they are eating, but a detailed analysis of poop can also help scientists determine the health of the overall ecosystem. Piles of scat in nature are a wealth of information to biologists, naturalists, and researchers. The Sioux called bison dung “nik-nik” which refers to any bovine feces. The plains Indians used bison chips or dung for fuel when wood was scarce. Whether humans were the hunter or potentially the hunted, dung piles along the path alerted many astute hunters to danger or reward. By evaluating the warmth and freshness of a dung pile, a hunter could know how close the bear or elk might be. By paying attention to poop on the path, skilled hunters could know which animals were in the area. Cherry pit-laden bear poop (Image credit, Why Identify Wildlife Poop?Īnimal poop identification has been an important tool since the beginning of time. Although this bit of fun seems unnecessary when there are already so many word choices preserving and utilizing Latin is important to scientists of all stripes. Therefore, the chosen medical/scientific term for an experiment based on poop is in fimo. If fimus was good enough for Virgil, it should be good enough for current usage. Fimus – the term used by Roman writers Virgil, Livy, and Tacitus.Stercus ¬– the common Roman term for poop, but evolved into a curse word.Merda – remains a Romance language word for poop, but relates to the smell or stink.Laetamen – seemed to most often be used in farming and animal dung. There were 4 Latin words that referred to poop, laetamen, merda, stercus, and fimus. This required a thorough exploration of the Latin words for poop. Recently a Classics Professor teamed up with doctors to produce an etymologically correct medical term for the experiment on human poop. Evaluating poop tells researchers and doctors much about our bodies and diseases. Scatology and coprology are both derived from Greek root words for poop. Whether you call it scat, dung, turds, fecal matter, excrement, droppings, crap, number 2, take a dump, bowel movement, stool, waste, or simply the “s” word, most people know exactly what you are referring to. Poop… perhaps no other word in the English language has more euphemisms than poop. For both animals and humans, poop is an important and natural function, and with the right tools, it can reveal a treasure trove of information. Still today, doctors often ask patients when their last bowel movement was. People believed you could tell fortunes or the future by evaluating someone’s poop. The ancient Chinese, Egyptians, and Greeks all analyzed human feces in an attempt to diagnose and treat all nature of illnesses. Analyzing poop is as old as pooping itself. Scatology or Coprology is the study of poop or excrement. |
